Hamilton Island

Australian Holidays Ad

Hamilton Island has been described as ‘the island that’s spoiling Australia’ and it’s difficult to disagree. It is certainly one of the favourite destinations of Australia! Hamilton Island, situated off the Queensland coast in the heat of the Whitsunday’s and The Great Barrier Reef, is unique as it has its own domestic airport which caters for almost 50 flights a week from the Australian mainland. Two airlines, Jetstar and Virgin Blue, both have flights which land at Hamilton Island airport. There are also frequent ferry services from Airlie Beach and guests to other islands such as Hayman Island also utilise the Hamilton Island airport.

Only an island can really offer that ‘Get away from it all’ feeling you just can’t find on the mainland. This is immediately apparent as you descend from the plane and walk to the quaint palm tree lined airport arrivals terminal. You will be so relieved that after looking online for the cheapest airline tickets, organizing packing for the whole family, travelling to the airport, that you have arrived in a slice of paradise. The sense of escapism is then reinforced as you are taken in air conditioned comfort to your accommodation and realize your luggage is already taken care of and delivered directly to your apartment, room or bungalow.

The airport has a very nice ‘I’ve just arrived at a tropical island’ to it, and you’ll find ferries to other islands easy to reach from the airport. There is an island taxi that runs continuously about the island and costs a couple of bucks for each ride if you haven’t already received this in a holiday package that you have booked for your stay. Light plane, sea planes and helicopter connections are also available from here to all the other island resorts as well as the mainland.
